The Deep Well Project was founded in 1973, digging wells to provide clean, safe water for the Hilton Head Island community.
Since then, it has been the source of emergency assistance to the local community and is supported by individuals, businesses, religious institutions, foundations, clubs, schools and various other organizations. Charlotte Heinrichs founded the Projsct as a service to the local community that suffered illness as a result of drinking contaminated water from shallow wells. Over the decades, other needs evolved and so did “Deep Well” (as it’s known on the Island).
Deep Well aids in emergency situations by giving those in need an immediate hand. It could be a rent payment between jobs or food for the family when the cupboard runs bare and when cash has all but run out. It could be school uniforms for children or floor repairs or the construction of a much-needed wheelchair ramp. At Deep Well, over 90% of our expenses go directly to client programs and services.
At this time of year, Deep Well is very busy.
Santa Shop:
In Early December, they start stocking their Santa Shop with a broad range of new toys, books, crafts and activities, as well as new clothes for children from ages 1 through 12. The toys are donated from individuals and organizations throughout the island. Volunteer shoppers purchase the clothes throughout the year, generally at Deep-Well discounts,.
At the Santa Shop, parents come in without their children present at appointed times. Shelves are re-stocked between sessions to provide a full selection for everyone. The debut of the Santa Shop in 2013 was a smashing success. Why?…Because it empowered families to have greater involvement in their children’s Christmas, with the opportunity to select the items they knew their children would like best.
Another reason for the Santa Shop’s success has been the generosity of individuals and organizations on Hilton Head Island. Their individual gifts and numerous toy drives help Deep Well programs a real value to the community. Some look at it as “giving back;” some help “just because” — no matter the reason, the spirit of giving is alive and well here.
