Where to Find The Perfect Pumpkin

The Lowcountry has a batch of family-friendly options as the atmosphere gets a little spookier and pumpkin patches kick into style. Here is where to find the perfect pumpkin:

Poppell Farms

Poppell Farms, in Odom, Georgia, grows and sells produce all year long, but October is all about the pumpkins. Families can hop on a hayride to the pumpkin patch, where they can pick and take home a small pumpkin. Other activities include a 10-acre corn maze, duck races, pony rides and a playground. Holiday Farms

Ridgeland, South Carolina is home to Holiday Farms, where The Great Pumpkin Patch features all kinds of farm-filled activities. Barrel races, the Barnyard Zoo, cow milking and steer roping are just a few of the fall festivities. Dempsey Farms

For a traditional pumpkin picking experience, Dempsey Farms has acres of pumpkins as well as fall/winter vegetables to choose from at a family-operated farm. Teachers, school trips are available. They are located 1576 Sea Island Parkway, St. Helena Island, 11 miles east of Beaufort on U.S. 21 South.

For those more interested in taking in the beauty of the fall, the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, in Savannah, is a must see. The Autumn Gardenfest allows guests to browse from nursery vendors, shop for garden tools and sit in on a few lectures. The Gardens feature a display of colorful cucurbits (like pumpkin and squash), which stretch along the 200-foot Crapemyrtle Allee.

Madrac Farms

About an hour drive from Hilton Head Island in Rincon, Georgia, the Reagan family grows their own Orange Bulldog Pumpkins. They were developed by the University of Georgia to grow in the South Georgia climate. At Madrac Farms, kids can pick their own pumpkins right off the vine. They offer a corn maze, hay ride, farm animals,  bouncy houses and a 13-foot slide. Kids can even take photos with the big 200-pound pumpkin! www.madracfarms.com.
