When Nick Wall was growing up in Palmetto Dunes, our little corner of the Lowcountry was quite a bit sleepier.
This was the 80s, and Nick and his brother spent their childhood with a “very laid back, very simple” Hilton Head as their playground. “We had so much fun getting into the lagoons and going fishing, riding bikes around the plantations and playing baseball at Barker Field,” Nick recalls. Occasionally they would hunt and fish off the Island. “Bluffton was all woods back then,” he says. “There was a small downtown but no Cross Island Parkway, and just a road through the trees leading to and from the Island.”
In the late 80s, Nick’s brother, Dondi, was one of the first in the bike business on Hilton Head. Nick started working for his brother when he was 10, and he caught the entrepreneurial bug. By the time he was in college for hospitality and tourism at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, he was already buying and selling companies. Nick is sure to give credit where it’s due.
“I owe my success, my work ethic to God first, then my dad and my brother,” he says. “I really do.”
Now, he and his family run Pedals Bicycles, and Nick is proud that it’s one of the few truly local bike companies on the Island. “We’ve been around forever!” he jokes.
Their bikes haven’t, though. Starting on January 1, every single one of Pedal’s bicycles has been replaced with all-new equipment. “During COVID, we couldn’t get the bikes in, and they finally arrived at the end of the season. We’re super excited to start the new year with a brand-new fleet!”
The Pedals team is also proud to provide superior service.
They stock everything from beach cruisers to kiddie karts to tandem bikes, work to keep prices affordable and offer convenient delivery and pick-up services every day from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Pedals also serves as a bike repair shop, so this is where to bring your blown tires, rusted chains, broken spokes or come in for your annual tune-up. “We’re family owned so that’s what we’re about. Accommodating families, serving the community. We’ve worked very hard to do this, we’ve been very successful and we’re very blessed.”
