Hilton Head Island has been honored with a Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award by the League of American Bicyclists for its outstanding efforts in promoting biking safety, accessibility, and infrastructure.
This recognition places Hilton Head in an elite group of 480 communities across the country leading the way in building better places for biking.
First achieving BFC status in 2011, the town has consistently renewed its commitment to creating safe and enjoyable biking experiences for all. Today, Hilton Head Island boasts 72 miles of multi-use public pathways shared by pedestrians and cyclists, offering both transportation and recreational benefits.
“We are incredibly thrilled to receive the Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community designation again,” said Mayor Alan Perry. “This recognition reflects the collaboration and passion of our local advocates, staff, and residents. Biking underscores our commitment to safe, sustainable pathways that enrich our community.”
Why the Gold-Level Matters
The Gold-level BFC award is a testament to Hilton Head’s investments in:
- Education programs for biking safety and awareness.
- Inclusive policies that promote equitable biking resources.
- Bike infrastructure, hosting regular events to encourage biking as a healthy, sustainable, and enjoyable mode of transportation.
This award reflects Hilton Head’s long-term dedication to enhancing biking for everyone, regardless of age or ability. The initiative not only fosters community well-being but also reinforces the town’s broader focus on sustainability and healthier lifestyle choices.
Elevating to New Heights
The League of American Bicyclists sets the standard for communities to evaluate their progress and continually improve safety, accessibility, and equity through biking initiatives. Earning a designation requires a rigorous application process and consistent renewal every four years. Mayor Perry reiterated that Hilton Head aims even higher. He’s pushing for the Platinum designation by fostering even greater community engagement and infrastructure development.
More Than a Recognition
Hilton Head Island’s BFC designation goes beyond awards—it builds more vibrant and connected neighborhoods. The town’s efforts to create safer biking conditions help reduce congestion and improve air quality. They also offer residents and tourists alike an alternative way to explore its natural beauty. By continuing to prioritize biking, Hilton Head Island not only sets an example for other communities but also ensures a healthier, more sustainable future for residents and visitors alike.
