As part of the Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration, The Art League of Hilton Head’s annual exhibit and sale of De Aarts Ob We People is a fan favorite.
Every year the Celebration presents one of the largest displays of original work by emerging and acclaimed artists representing the life of Gullah people in our area. This year, the Walter Greer Gallery, in partnership with the Hilton Head Island Art League celebrates the remarkable work of the esteemed Saundra “Renee” Smith. Her vibrant artistry will be showcased alongside works from more than 280 local members. Known as this year’s featured artist, Saundra invites you into the heart of Gullah culture through her vivid and deeply spiritual creations.

Saundra “Renee” Smith is a celebrated Gullah Folk Artist and founder of Gullah Art By Renee, LLC. She has become a distinguished voice in self-taught artistry. A member of the National Association of Women Artists and featured in Betty-Carol Sellen’s Guide to American Artist’s “Self-Taught, Outsider and Folk Art”, her impact on the art community is undeniable.
Saundra’s work goes beyond the canvas—it’s a celebration of the rich history and traditions of the Gullah people.

Her masterful use of bold colors and dynamic compositions in acrylic and oil paints transforms everyday moments of the Gullah community into compelling works of art. Each piece tells a story, reflecting the vibrant spirit and deep heritage of a culture that has shaped American history.
Smith’s artwork pays homage to the Gullah Geechee Corridor. The Corridor is a cultural treasure on the southeastern coast of the United States. The areas along it hold the histories and traditions of the Guale Indians and West African descendants. She uses multimedia to beautifully portray daily life and spirituality in the Gullah community. Her vibrant depictions of women in colorful dresses and headscarves, along with themes of baskets, flowers, water, and sky, provide a heartfelt glimpse into the world of “de luk pon we island.”
During this special month-long exhibition, you’ll have the chance to experience Saundra’s work up close. Every piece is a tribute to the cultural legacy of the Gullah/Geechee Corridor. Each offers a glimpse into its beauty, resilience, and spirituality. Whether you’re an art enthusiast or someone eager to explore cultural heritage, this exhibition promises to inspire and captivate. Come and witness the power, passion, and profound storytelling of her exceptional art.
