The Art League of Hilton Head proudly presents “Art That Makes You Smile: The Gently Surreal Art of John K. Crum.”
John Crum is an expressionist painter of figures and gentle surreal landscapes. His work displays his recognizable narrative themes, diverse subjects, bright color palettes, and bold designs. Building his paintings with several wet-to-dry layers, John creates deep dimensions and details to hold the viewer in wonder and awe. His distinctive subject matter uses subjective perspectives, distorted for emotional effect, evoking different moods, feelings, and ideas.
Crum’s whimsical and graphic work features bright color palettes, bold designs, and, in his own words, “gentle, surreal landscapes” sure to brighten the viewer’s mood. He distorts perspectives in curious, whimsical scenes in order to tell his joyful stories.
“I love to paint themes such as life experiences, romance, love, and the human spirit,” says Crum. “I want to make people smile while taking them on an unexpected and magical journey.”

He graduated from the Ringling School of Art & Design in Sarasota, Florida in 1973, John came to Hilton Head Island over two decades ago from Bay Village, Ohio. He exhibits his work locally, including The Pluff Mudd Art Gallery in historic Old Town Bluffton.
