Preserving Our Iconic Angel Oak Trees.

At the corner of William Hilton Parkway and Squire Pope Road, something is happening. It’s a project aiming to improve visibility, enhance safety and aesthetics, and honor the history of these beloved Angel Oaks.
Angel Oaks are exceptionally large Southern live oaks.

They are not only an iconic symbol of Hilton Head Island, but they also have a rich history that dates back centuries. These trees have withstood hurricanes, development, and changing times, making them a cherished part of our community.
The first, original Angel Oak tree is located in Angel Oak Park on Johns Island near Charleston, South Carolina. The tree is approximately 400–500 years old and stands 66.5 ft. tall. It measures 28 ft. in circumference and produces shade that covers 17,200 square ft. The oak’s name originates from the estate of Justus Angel and his wife, Martha Waight Tucker Angel. Local folklore shares tales of ghosts of formerly enslaved individuals, appearing as angels around the tree.
The Town of Hilton Head has hired tree care experts to clear undergrowth, dead limbs, and vines near the Angel Oaks on Town-owned property. This process includes the removal of smaller trees that obstruct the view and encroach on the Oaks’ canopies. To boost their health, root-feeding by injecting nutrients directly into the tree’s root zone helps the trees.
“Native trees like the Angel Oaks have always been integral to Hilton Head Island’s charm, and we are dedicated to protecting and maintaining them,” said Town Manager Marc Orlando.
“This initiative not only improves safety and visibility but also preserves the legacy of these majestic Angel Oaks and their role in our community’s history.”
Additionally, low-voltage lighting and landscaping around the trees highlight the importance to the Angel Oaks. It also honors the leagacy of the historic Stoney neighborhood to the community and visitors. This project promises to preserve our environment and honor the legacy of these magnificent trees.
