Gullah Me, Gullah You – General Harriet Tubman. Philly native & Georgia transplant, Kova Walker has proudly portrayed Harriett Tubman for Historic Mitchellville Freedom Park at the 2024 South Carolina State Legislators appreciation reception in Columbia. Walker works in the creative arts industry with her most recent projects including work with legendary filmmakers Ava Duvernay in Origin and Clint Eastwood in Juror #2. Feb. 1, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.: WE STILL RISE: Ol ‘ Fashioned Gullah Breakfast: Celebrate one of the most historic days of the year crafted with samplings of authentic Gullah cuisine.
Feb. 1, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.: Join us for Freedom Day 2025 at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, honoring the remarkable contributions of African Americans to labor, leadership, and community development. This year’s theme, “Honoring African American Labor, Leadership, and Harriet Tubman’s Legacy,” highlights the incredible impact of Harriet Tubman as a fearless leader and visionary who shaped Historic Mitchelville into a thriving economy. Feb. 4-Mar. 28: “ARTS OB WE PEOPLE” Art Exhibition: Browse the Art League of Hilton Head’s annual exhibit and sale with original works by emerging and acclaimed artists that represent local Gullah life. Opening Reception takes place Feb. 5, 5-7 p.m.
Feb. 8, 12-3 p.m.: “Voices of Gullah”: This celebration of the lyrical language of Gullah song and storytelling takes place at the Arts Center of Hilton Head. In addition to entertainment, the event showcases art, hands-on crafts, and delicious food-truck fare, all with Gullah flavor. Feb. 7, 7-8 p.m.: Friends & Family at the First African Baptist Church: This extraordinary program showcases the soul-stirring melodies, captivating stories, heartfelt prayers and rich history of the First African Baptist Church.
Feb. 28, 5-8 p.m.: Gullah Twilight Music & Market With Deas-Guyz: at the Coastal Discovery Museum.
