Purple Bikes and Stylish Shoes Find a Home on Arrow Road
Right around the curve past Target Road, the plaza at 119 Arrow Road is getting some new tenants. Or should we say families? While Christie Richardson and her father Darrell brought Gracie’s Bike Sales & Rentals to this quaint area across the street from Island Motors, husband-and-wife duo, Michelle and Lewis Flagg, opened Chelle’s Shoe Store last month.
Getting Geared up with Gracie’s
Located two blocks away from Sea Pines Circle and just 1.5 miles from Coligny Beach, Gracie’s Bike Sales & Rentals—the place with the purple bikes—is excited to finally have a storefront, especially since it is right on some of Hilton Head Island’s most popular bike routes.
“We’ve increased our facility and fleet by 50 percent this year and we’re just really excited to get started for the upcoming season,” Christie said.
After taking over ownership of what was formerly known as Island Bike Rentals in 2016, Christie and Darrell Richardson renamed the company in memory of Christie’s mom and Darrell’s late wife, Gracie. For a year, they operated out of the company from Island Drive, until they found this storefront in January 2017.
“It really opened us up to more opportunities,” Christie said. “Now, my dad has his own repair shop and I have my own office. And what is really inviting about this space is that it actually has room so we can sell bikes now too.”
In 2016 they became an authorized Fuji bike dealer and in 2017 they started selling bikes at the new space, which they spruced up with new flooring and paint.
This new location also enables them to better accommodate customers. Instead of sizing people to bikes over the phone, guests are able to come in and try out the different bikes. Visitors can come in and test out their new 2017 Fuji 26” and 24” bikes to see which fits better, or opt for a 20’’ bike if the individual is five-foot or shorter. They also have 16” bikes with training wheels available for kids.
With hourly and daily rental service and the ability for customers to park-n-ride, this bike rental company is steady cruising.
Searching for Shoes at Chelle’s
Right next door to Gracie’s Bike Sales & Rentals is another new shop, Chelle’s Shoe Box, which was opened by Michelle and Lewis Flagg, who moved to Hilton Head from Atlanta in June of 2015, after vacationing on the Island for almost 10 years.
“We just looked at the Island to see if there were many shoe stores on the Island and there weren’t,” Michelle said. “We thought the idea would be great to open up an affordable shoe shop for the Islanders and visitors.”
Inside their shop, which was named after Michelle, customers will find everything from sandals to sundresses, boots to brooches and heels to handbags. Their focus is on women’s shoes, but they also offer an assortment of other accessories, including leggings, handbags, scarves and shawls, and some clothing items as well.
“I have a few children’s sandals on hand right now, but I want to get more men’s shoes, children’s shoes, T-shirts and other stuff like that,” Michelle said. “Maybe we’ll also get some accessories, sunglasses, jewelry and hats. We want to try to have it all.”
As far as women’s shoes go, they are certainly on track. From lace-up combat boots to knee length slip on boots and short fur-lined boots, their array also includes a variety of heels and pumps, with closed-toe, slip on, lace-up and cut out heels to wedge sandals, sling backs and short chunky booties. Most of the sandals cost between $10 to $15.99, with heels ranging from $19.99 to $24.99.
“We’re ready for everybody,” Michelle exclaimed. “We’re ready to finish the winter out and we’re ready for spring and summer.”
