Hilton Head Island’s very own Island Winery was named a “Top Wineries and Breweries Worth Traveling For” by FlipKey, Trip Advisor’s vacation travel site.
The “50 States Series” chose one winery or brewery from each state. Island Winery won the title of South Carolina’s travel-worthy spot!
“We’ve searched for the best winery and/or brewery in every state to put together a list of places you just can’t miss,” FlipKey stated. “These are places with an unbeatable ambiance. More importantly the craft brews and aged wines are award-winning.”
Island Winery, owned by Loren and Georgene Mortimer, opened in 2006 on Hilton Head Island.
In addition to handcrafted wines are produced locally on the Island, Loren and Georgene select the finest grapes from the world’s best wine regions for some wines and use local grapes and other fruits for their popular line of Low Country Specialty wines. Their bright colored labels showcase local artists and Lowcountry scenes.
“When we thought about how we can create a unique line of wines. Our inspiration was to try to capture all that is unique about the Low Country,” said Georgene. “Wines like our Peach on the Beach and Blueberry wines incorporate local fruits. Southern Passion is a unique sangria recipe and a refreshing way to wash down slow cooked BBQ. Our Margarita Wine has zesty lime flavors, so it tastes great with local seafood. We make our Low Country specialty wines crisp and refreshing. We suggest serving them cold. Island Winery keeps in mind the heat that defines our Low Country summers.”
The Island Winery staffs its tasting room with friendly, knowledgeable wine lovers.
They enjoy answering questions by curious wine tasters and tourists. They offer wine tastings and also serve wine by the glass or bottle, which can be enjoyed in their barrel room.
“Georgene and I have visited many of the South Carolina wineries and breweries. We’ve tasted some really great products,” said Loren. “There is a lot of good competition in our state.”
