Family Fun Day at Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn, August 10th!

The Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island has announced a “Family Fun Day” on August 10th from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at their location at Honey Horn. This event will give the public yet another opportunity to see what the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn has to offer.

You can start the day by visiting the Famer’s Market which is open 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. On your own you will be able to see the Museum’s boardwalk exhibits, learn about our salt marsh, explore the Replica Shell Ring and see what sort of shells, animal bones, and more- are hidden in the replica Shell Ring. You will have the opportunity to visit the horse barn and pasture to see our marsh tackies “Tadpole” and “Rosie” and then learn about archeology with our Camp Dig-It demonstration with hands-on activities with actual artifacts! A visit to the Karen Wertheimer Butterfly Enclosure will let you see the life cycle of various butterflies we have here on Hilton Head Island.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to throw a cast net, pull up the crab trap, tour the Heritage Garden and see what rice, cotton, Indigo and other crops look like. Bird watching and fiddler crab activity is where the action is from any of the 3 boardwalks visitors may visit.

During the day in the new Kid’s Zone, children will have an opportunity to try on Colonial clothing, play with Colonial toys and games, take a scavenger hunt on the pained mural wall and learn about shells, turtle bones and many other items found on our island thanks to the sponsorship of The Bargain Box. Myrtle the Terrapin and horseshoe crabs are also in the room for entertainment.

The Hilton Head Regional Health Care Temporary Exhibit Gallery will feature “Looking Back, Rising Forward – Honoring the History of Gullah-Geechee Islands” by Amiri Farris and Judy Mooney.

The Sandbox Children’s Museum, Audubon and Land Trust will also have activities during the day. Many other activities will be available all day, so visit the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn and see what is available on this 68 acre parcel of land.
