February 18: Penelope Holmes Parker will present this program as part of the “History Forum of the Lowcountry.” For 150 years the Beaufort National Cemetery held a marker indicating the grave of an “Unknown Confederate Soldier.” While researching the history of the William Wigg Barnwell House in Beaufort, our presenter uncovered the identity of this “unknown” soldier. Mrs. Parker will retrace the paper trail that led to the identification of the unknown soldier as Pvt. Haywood Treadwell of the 61st NC Volunteers, the locating of the soldier’s descendants and the ceremony for the unveiling his new gravestone in the Beaufort National Cemetery by his 5th great grandson. Program is no charge for Museum members, $10 for all others, and reservations are required by calling (843) 689-6767 ext. 223. For more information, coastaldiscovery.org/event-registration/?ee=1604.
