Hilton Head Island 350/30! In September of 1663, Captain William Hilton was sailing through Port Royal Sound when he spotted a headland on a nearby island. Hilton Head Island 350/30! In September of 1663, Captain William Hilton was sailing through Port Royal Sound when he spotted a headland on a nearby island. His eagle eye earned him to the honor of putting Hilton on the map, as mapmakers named the island in his honor. Thus, Hilton’s Head land became Hilton Head Island. 320 years later, Hilton Head Island became the Town of Hilton Head Island. And now, 30 years later, an anniversary blowout to commemorate both events. The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce, the Coastal Discovery Museum, the Heritage Library Foundation and the Town of Hilton Head are all working together with a slew of area organizations to make the week-long event happen. It will kick off with a town open house Sept. 30, 2013 and culminate in a huge beach party Oct. 5, 2013, with events in between including tours of historic sites and lectures on the area. All locals and organizations are invited to participate. To be part of history, call Linda Piekut, (843) 686-6560 or lindapiekut@gmail.com or 350/30 Chair, Leslie Richardson, leslie@richardsongrp.com or celebrationhhi.org.

Driving On Hilton Head Island

U. S. Route 278 is the only highway coming to Hilton Head Island. 278 extends all the way to I-95 (Exit #8).

After you cross the large bridge (which spans the Intercoastal Waterway), you are now on the Island. About 2 miles onto the Island, you’ll see signs for the New Cross Island Parkway, (stay in the left lanes) or Business 278 (stay in the right lanes). Until 1998, Business 278 was the only way you could go. It was the only road traversing the Island, and ended at Sea Pines Circle.

The speed limit is 45 mph, and there are many stoplights along the way. It used to take between 25 & 30 minutes to get to the Sea Pines Circle on Business 278. With the new Cross Island Parkway (speed limit 55 mph and no lights), it now takes only 5-6 minutes to get to Sea Pines Circle.

The new Parkway is about 6 miles long, and there is a $1.25 toll. The toll booth is located just before you cross Broad Creek.

If you are going to stay in Shipyard Plantation, Long Cove or Wexford, along North or South Forest Beach Drive, or anywhere in Sea Pines Plantation, you will get there much quicker by using the Cross Island Parkway.

If you are going to Indigo Run, Hilton Head Plantation, Palmetto Hall, Beach & Tennis Resort or Port Royal Plantation, it is best to use Business 278.

If you are going to Palmetto Dunes, it’s kind of a toss-up. Under normal traffic conditions, it’s probably no faster to use the Cross Island Parkway. On the other hand, if there is an accident on Business 278 in the direction you are going, and you haven’t yet reached Palmetto Dunes, you may want to turn around and get on the Cross Island Parkway.

Either way you go, take your time, drive safely, and enjoy our beautiful Island.

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides over 50 miles of public pathways and nature trails for the enjoyment of pedestrians and cyclists.

At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Island Events’ Island Map.

Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one side, and a localized map of the area on the other.

Rules For The Road

Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedestrians and other users.

Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available.

Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

Watch out for motorists! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

Bike Path map

Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flashlight. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the pathways.

Be courteous, alert and predictable.

Pathway Markings

White Stripe & Stop Sign – Road crossing. Stop and look for motorists.
Yellow Center Line – Two-way traffic. Keep to the right.
Several Ladder Hatching Stripes – Crosswalk.

Please lock your bicycle when not in use! Bicycle thefts are preventable.
